Dish Network Glossary!

A

Access Card- A plastic card similar to credit card remains within the satellite TV receiver system. This device provides Pay-Per-View dish network programming usage information to the service providers for billing purpose.

Additional Outlet- Satellite TV receiver device, other than primary one, attached to satellite TV dish is termed as additional outlet. This allows dish network subscribers to connect more than one television systems to the same network connection.

Audio-Video Jacks-A/V Jack at the rear of the dish network receiver system provides superior picture and sound output.
Azimuth- Direction adjustment of satellite TV dish along the horizon. It is measured in degrees.

B

Blackout Area- A specified range of the country where a certain dish network programming service is not available.

C

C-Band- Dish network C-band is a specified dish network signal frequency range.

D

DBS- DBS is the short form of Digital Broadcast Satellite or Direct Broadcast Satellite. DBS system is commonly referred to as mini dish system. Dish Network, Direct TV and Pegasus are all DBS satellite system.

Digital Audio Broadcasting- Advanced dish network technology standard of transmitting digital audio signals. Using DAB technology, satellite TV delivers crisp uninterrupted sound in binary code.  

Digital Compression- The process of translating video image into compressed digital code is termed as digital compression. Using this process more dish network channels can be transmitted through satellite transporters.

DSS- Digital Satellite System that commonly refers to Direct TV satellite component.

Direct TV system- Direct TV is a brand name for satellite TV service provider. The system includes satellite TV dish, satellite receiver and remote control device.

Dish Network – Dish Network is a trademark name of Echostar, one of the leading satellite TV service providers.

Down Link- I0000t is a path through which dish network signal comes to the satellite TV dish.

DVB- DVB is the short form of Digital Video Broadcast. It is a satellite TV industry consortium that includes over 300 dish network manufacturer and broadcasters who are promoting the advanced digital broadcasting services.

E

EchoStar- The owner of Dish Network.

EPG- EPG is the short form of electronic program guide. It is a chronological listing of available dish network programs. The satellite TV programming list comes on your television screen.

Elevation- Elevation is the alignment angle of dish network antenna focusing at communication satellite. Satellite TV dish elevation is measured in degrees.

F

Feed Horn- A device remains attached with satellite TV dish focusing on the dish surface. It collets satellite signals from the dish and channels to the LNB.

 Fixed dish system- Fixed dish system is a concept where satellite TV dish are never meant to be moved. It a larger satellite network broadcasting system that is commonly used y the military or government. Dish Network and Direct TV both primarily provide satellite TV services in fixed dish system.

Footprint- Depending on incoming satellite beam on Earth, a certain area is determined where a particular satellite signal comes. In other words, the satellite TV signal when reflected back to the Earth can only reach a certain portion and that is called the footprint. Therefore to get the dish network connection one must install their satellite TV dish to the footprint area.

Geostationary- Dish network satellite orbits the Earth 22,300 miles above the equator and rotate at the same speed and direction as earth. Therefore these dish network satellites are appeared to be stationary with respect to earth.

HDTV- HDTV is the High Definition Television system that is configured to provide high resolution video with Dolby digital sound out. In connection with dish network television programming system HDTV create an outstanding television viewing experience. 

HD DVR- HD DVR or High Density Digital Video Recorder is a specialized dish network receiver system that records ongoing and upcoming satellite TV shows and provides many other featured options to personalize dish network programs.

Offset- Offset fed dish network antennas are most commonly found on mini satellite TV dishes. Offset satellite TV dishes are often referred to as asymmetrical and often have parabolic satellite dish.

One Touch Recording- With this specialized feature dish network allows viewers to record shows just a single button click. One touch dish network features controls the start and stopping time of a recording process.

Parental Control Lock- Dish network programming features allow users to set password and lock certain satellite TV channels.

Pay per View- Dish network subscribers can upgrade their subscription any time with additional fees. This scheme has been named as pay-per-view, which allows users to order movies from a large selection options. Presently subscribers don’t have to order for pay per view satellite TV programs. An interactive display menu comes on television screen and users can watch any of them. The pay per view charges will get calculated automatically through the phone line connected with dish network connection.

PVR- PVR stands for personal video recorder. Dish network has specialized receiver systems with built in hard drive to record and save certain satellite TV programs. The PVR enabled dish TV receivers are popularly known as HD DVR system.

Rain fade- It is the loss of dish network signal due to bad weather, heavy rain, storm etc. that mostly happens with DBS system. Dish network service is well set to restore a rain fade almost instantly.

Receiver- It is a dish network device that collects satellite signals from satellite TV dish and transmits them to the television terminal after decoding and decompressing the format. There are various satellite TV receivers compatible to deliver specialized quality programs.
